Die Gemeinschaft der Mädchen untereinander, die Auflehnung gegen das sie unterdrückende System, Leis unerschöpfliche Hoffnung, verbotene LGBT-Liebe und das asiatische Setting haben mich das Werk mit dem bezaubernden Cover förmlich verschlingen lassen. Die Welt ist nicht immersiv (wer will schon zum Sex gezwungen werden?), aber sie verschluckt einen trotzdem einfach ungefragt. Ich habe endlich mal wieder superviele Post-Its verwenden müssen, um mir all die wundervollen Sätze merken zu können und ich beiße mir furchtbar in den Hintern, mir nicht die superlimitierte Sonderausgabe der Fairylootbox gesichert zu haben... The best I've read in years. Absolutely loved it and can't wait for the next book!
I am still in awe of the world building and the writing in this book. It felt so expertly crafted, perfectly paced and structured, the words flowing over the page and getting right under your skin to burro deep and stay there. Add in the queer love story arc and I was deeply in love with this story.But. I also struggled a lot with it. I wish I would’ve gotten trigger warnings for this story before starting it. While I was expecting a certain degree of violence, also sexual violence, in this story simply because of the setting and the premise of the book, I was not prepared for the way it played a role in the story. How *central* it would be for most of the book, or how graphic the depictions of sexual assault, coercion and rape would be. Or how deeply the effects of sexual violence, trauma, abuse and manipulation and gaslighting would be described and analyzed. Maybe I should’ve been? I still wish I could’ve read through content warnings before starting the actual book so I could prepare myself. Because the way it was donne was *amazing*, it just wish I would've known before going in. I was not prepared. Also the dog dies right in the beginning and no matter how much you want to mock me for it, I wish somebody would have warned me about that, too.Putting aside the missing content warnings, I was deeply moved and impressed by how empathetically and deeply emotional the book approached these topics, dealt with them and how it made it very hard for me to read, but never impossible.I do have to admit that I struggled with the ending in a very big way. Not because it was bad or badly written or thought out. Not at all. But because it left me hanging so hard after all the emotional and mental gut punches. I’m usually not opposed to cliffhangers and don’t have extreme responses to them, but with this book I couldn’t help but feel resentful in the end. Which might not be the most reasonable reaction, because it was a great book with a solid ending, but since the subject matters were so hard for me to read through despite the exceptional prose I felt… betrayed, maybe. That I had held on until the end and fought tooth and nail to get there only to be left with another gut punch at the end. I’m aware a somewhat happy end is not a requirement in this genre, or for a book with a sequel, and yet… it just didn’t sit right with me. I desperately wanted to read the sequel already, the additional cliffhanger on top of the already unsolved problems hanging over the protagonists’ heads made me feel too desperate and too angry to finish the story with a somewhat good feeling my gut. I do still want to read the sequel because my very emotional response to it isn’t really the book’s fault, but I might need a little more time than usual to recover from the first read enough in order to get excited for the next part of the journey.
